Survey Analysis
Thursday 1 March
We got 24 responses to our survey. 70% were female and these are the age ranges from our respondents:
Question 4
This question asked the public what films they have watched and enjoyed in the last 6 months.
The three most popular genres were comedy, action and documentary. Whilst our film is not necessarily an action film, the comedy and documentary is a pleasing result, as it is clear that many ages and genders have watched and enjoyed these types of films. The people that did not watch and enjoy comedy seemed to overwhelmingly be older females (46-55 and 75+), whilst that for documentaries came from the younger population. Despite this, I think that the comedy aspect represents more for our target audience and we can expect to target a young audience.
Question 5
This question asked our audience what aspect of a film they felt was most important. Whilst this question may not help in finding out who our target audience is, it will help us attract our imagined audience (18-24 year olds)
This is a pie chart showing the responses of 18-24 year olds. As you can see, setting is the most important aspect of a film, followed by sound. This lets us know that we should focus more on the setting of our film whilst preparing and filming, and the sound whilst editing and film (perhaps by using original music and foley sounds)
Question 6
This question was asking how often the audience watched mockumentaries.
The original response was not promising:
However, upon further research, we found out that 72% of people aged 18-24 watch mockumentaries once a month or more, so this further shows that this should be our target audience. Among this, there are no females that never watch them, however 57% of males watch them once a week or more. From this, we can gather that our target audience will probably be males aged 18-24.
Question 6
This question asked if the respondent preferred dark humour or slapstick humour. Whilst our film includes both, we wanted to research which humour to incorporate more.
This response would show us to incorportate more slapstick comedy into our film. When considering that our target audience is 18-24, the response only minimally changes:
However, from this graph, we can also gather that males overwhelmingly prefer dark comedy, whilst females only responded to liking slapstick.
Question 7 and 8
These questions asked whether the audience enjoy Youtube videos/documentaries on killers and unsolved murders (question 7) and TV shows about dating, such as the Undateables and First Dates (question 8). For these two questions, I am going to analyse the age range of 18-24, as we have already established that this is our targeted age range and would like to further investigate the genders within this bracket.
Out of these results, everyone watched mockumentaries (e.g. The Office and Modern Family), so it is clear that this particular genre in this age bracket is not specific to gender.
However, in regards to dating shows, an expected lean towards female viewers was found, although it was minimal.
This shows that girls are slightly more likely to watch these shows, however both genders are interested in them.
Summary of our Target Audience
Our results have shown us that comedies and documentaries appeal to the majority of audiences, and the younger the audience the more popular they are. However, when these genres combine to make a mockumentary, the audience seems to dramatically change, and almost exclusively attract an audience younger than 24 years old.
To further this, in regards to specifics of this genre and the specifics of our film, they seem to appeal to a young male audience slightly more than that of females. However, female viewers will still make up a large proportion of our audience.
Therefore, our audience will be of 18-24 year olds of all genders, leaning more towards males.
